Helping Mom and Dad Move
When it's time for the family home to go, here's who can make it easier on everyone.
Moving a parent out of the house they've lived in for decades is one of the hardest moves there is. Forty years of belongings, a lot of memories and usually a tight timeline. As a REALTOR®, I see it often, and the families who bring in help early have a much easier time.
Downsize First is run by Christine, a friend of mine, and she is wonderful at this. She builds a clear plan around your timeline, helps sort what's going, what's staying and what's being passed down, and manages the organizing and the move itself. It starts with a free in-home consultation, which is a gentle first step for a parent who isn't sure yet.
Start the conversation early. A few months of lead time means decisions can happen calmly instead of in the last week.
Let them choose the special things first. The china, the art, the furniture with a story. Everything else gets easier once those are settled.
Lean on the community once they've moved. Calgary Seniors' Resource Society has volunteers for rides, groceries and friendly visits, Unison runs programs and meals for adults 50 and up, and Calgary Meals on Wheels delivers hot meals.
Erin's tip: If you're helping a parent sell, call me before you start packing. Knowing the timeline for the sale makes planning the move so much simpler.
